When the moment of shuffling the deck arrives whilst getting cards read to you by someone, it is easy to clam up and feel like you are about to perform an Oscars acceptance speech. Even though the only thing you need to do is mix the cards together, it can feel like you have been put on the spot.
Understandably, this can make you feel quite hesitant and nervous about how well you do – or how well you do not do!
There is more to shuffling a deck of cards than meets the eye. If you know anything about tarot card reading, then you will understand the energetic power it can give to the person being read to.
Hopefully, this guide I have put together will help you to understand why the shuffling of the cards is important and how to do it properly.
Why Do We Need to Shuffle Tarot Cards?
Even though I have it down to a T when it comes to shuffling cards (practice makes perfect), why do we even have to shuffle the cards anyway? Obviously, you do not want to keep drawing the same cards each time, so having a well-shuffled deck of cards is practical.
Other than that, shuffling the deck is very important when it comes to your energetic level. During this time it puts us in a state of meditation, though not in the literal sense, where we can ask for guidance, assistance, and protection from the Divine Support System – the chosen belief system.
Also, it is a good time to ask questions, whether out loud or in your mind. The sort of questions you are likely wanting to ask are focused on what you currently need advice on, and hopefully, this will be answered during the card reading itself.
Doing so helps to center our own energy and ground us. In doing this, it puts us in the right state to help connect us to those answers we are seeking through the cards being read.
So, in a sense, we are shuffling ourselves within the cards, and that is why the process is extra important. It is a personal way for us to connect hands-on with the cards so we can see what answers are available to us at that very moment.
Also, going through this process will help us to get a more accurate reading from the cards as if the divine spirit has taken our trust and is therefore helping to guide us.
What Hand Should I Use?
You might be surprised to hear that it is fairly important to know which hand to use when shuffling the cards. Traditionally a card reader would use their left hand when controlling a shuffle and to deal the cards. This was because they felt it meant they would receive accurate cosmic wisdom.
Even so, others believe – whether right or left-handed – that you should deal with cards using your least dominant hand. Because most people are right-handed, they will use their left hand to deal. Though, of course, if you are left-handed you will use your right hand.
Even though you feel nervous when it comes to shuffling the cards, authenticity will actually do you a favor. We all get that clammy feeling when we first do it (me included), but if you want an accurate reading, you need to put yourself fully into the process.
As I stated before, the shuffling process will center your energy and in doing so, will connect us to Source energy that signifies we can trust information and any guidance that we are given during the reading.
So, to put it simply, if you want an honest and accurate reading, make sure the way you shuffle is authentically done, whether you are shaking with nerves or sitting comfortably.
So, How Do We Shuffle Tarot Cards?
Drum roll, please… There is actually no correct way to shuffle the cards. Everyone does it in their own unique way and that is fine. Even so, here are some tips I have put together for when it comes to shuffling the Tarot cards:
1. Open the tarot cards – if you are the one doing the reading
When you open a brand-new tarot deck, or if you have bought it second-hand, you need to cleanse it to remove any energetic sources that may be on them.
Usually, this is done by meditating with the deck as each card is passed through the smoke of sage or palo santo. Doing so helps people get accurate readings, but this is not necessary to you if you are only getting your cards read.
2. When the cards are given to you, think of a question you need guidance on
This is the first step in focusing your energy on the cards. Take a moment meditatively to ask the cards about something you are seeking advice about. This could be something as silly as whether your date is worth it, to something more serious like your career.
3. Focus on the question and start to shuffle the cards
The only rule that is necessary when shuffling the cards is to shuffle the cards in a way you feel is right. It could be anything, from dividing the cards up into sections and putting them back together, or trying to do it casino style.
There is no right or wrong way, and ultimately it all comes down to how well you can mix a deck of cards.
4. Once you have shuffled the cards, now it is time to draw the cards
Just like with shuffling, there is no right or wrong way when it comes to the card-method reading. Some people do three – others four. It is down to personal choice, so do not feel like you are doing something wrong.
As you have just found out, there is actually no correct way to shuffle the cards.
The secret is in how the cards connect with you on a personal level. So long as you can shuffle the cards well enough just generally, how you do it is up to you so long as you feel comfortable.
There you have it, even though you probably still cannot shuffle cards like a professional, you probably will not be as nervous the next time the cards are given to you!
